At Dataquest, we teach data science to a community of hundreds of thousands of students worldwide. We help students deeply learn concepts, build projects, work together, and gain the confidence they need to start new careers. Read more about our philosophy here, and read what students think here.

We're bootstrapped, and we've been growing revenue 2-3x a year since we launched in 2015. Our remote team has grown from 1 to 13 in that time, and we expect our team size to be between 20 and 25 by the end of the year.

To grow revenue without investment, you have to be laser focused and able to ruthlessly prioritize. You have to look at metrics constantly, and be able to understand how they relate to the actual student experience. There's not much margin for error, and there's no extra cushion to fall back on. On the other hand, you have control, and can do what's best for the students at all times.

To make a remote team work effectively, you have to be extremely good at communication. You have to be able to allow your team to take ownership of what they're building, and own the implementation, while still being guided by high level student context and metrics.

We're looking for a Director of Operations who can help us keep growing revenue quickly while maintaining our remote culture of mostly autonomous work. We want someone who can help us communicate, prioritize, and build more efficiently. Success in this role is making everyone else on the team 20-30% more efficient.

This mostly means that you'll help us:

  • Ensure that everyone on our team has the same understanding of our students
  • Prioritize what to work on, and what to drop
  • Identify metrics to use to guide everyone's work
  • Identify processes that could be improved, and test the improvements
  • Communicate the current state of all areas of the company and any blockers to team members

How this role looks exactly will depend on your skills and interests—you'll have a lot of autonomy to help shape a growing education company.

In order to support our fast growth and take on that autonomy, you'll have had experience quickly scaling teams and/or revenue in startup environments.

We think that someone who is a good fit for this role will be:

  • Able to ruthlessly prioritize against metrics
  • Extremely data-driven and analytical (we are, after all, a data science company)
  • Good at setting goals and creating accountability in others
  • Able to understand the core student-facing value of a new feature
  • Willing to put in the time to understand our students deeply

Working at Dataquest gives you the chance to work with a mission-focused, motivated, team that's tackling an important problem.

This is a full-time remote role, and the salary range is $80k - $120k USD per year, plus equity.
